Basic criteria should mean that a partner should behave in a caring, honest, trustworthy manner.

They should have values and be capable of behaving like a decent human being, not just for other people, but for you.

There’s nothing wrong with that, even though they think there is. Even if a guy seems nice, we’ll eventually find a flaw or two.

Once that happens, we won’t know whether to continue dating him or to toss him to the side.
